| Planting seeds, pulling weeds.
Lord, sustain me. | | |
| This song consists of a bunch of memories I shared as a child with my dad (whom we lovingly call "Fath"). I like this song because it's so simple and happy-- it brings back memories of cruising down the highway on sunny days in that red Camaro with the hard-top down, my dad wearing his thick-rimmed Ray-Ban sunglasses, blasting that red tape of Chinese music. So much so, in fact, that I feel I could have written this song twelve years ago. =).
(Happy Father's Day!)
FOR FATH Words and music by Michael Yee 5-22-2008
We stretched our Bit’O’Honey Car-heater melted toffee In a fire-red Chevy Camaro These days it’s donuts and coffee Oh how we’ve grown up
Still, I remember pickin’ up that violin Faking practice when you weren’t in But still you took us fishin’ And still you got me thinkin’
That many different winds will blow And we may sail far But never will we forget your hand Around ours So we’ll always remember where we are
Daddy Ferrari A hundred Animalies Cool Cat Café Always cooked you something silly Though legos aren’t digestible You never had a stomachache to show
Guitar-chasers, Jitterbug-shakers Privileged in every way Oh, any kid in any day would say “You spoiled brats” But dare I say
That many different winds will blow And we may sail far But never will we forget your hand Around ours So we’ll always remember where we are

| Tens of thousands of my people died yesterday within a handful of minutes.
My Chinese brothers and sisters, do you feel it? Our people have been crushed like Sodom and Gomorrah, and stripped like Nineveh.
Who has known the mind of the LORD?
I hope your heart is as heavy as mine today, to spur you on-- for there is much work to be done. There is something bigger going on in this world than just you or me-- there is a hand and a plan behind all of this.
What are you living for?

| This one is meant to sound somewhat cinematic, like a bird flying fast over a variety of bright, color-saturated landscapes (or dreamscapes).
IF LIFE WAS A FILM Words by Michael Yee and Sarah Lee Music by Michael Yee 1-8-2008
If life was a film, you and I'd fall madly in love Big city lights, short-lived fights, then scenic change to a Kiss in the rain, hitched in a day A big high-rise condo in the Middle of Manhattan, chocolate and satin sheets
If life was a film I'd be the hero Speed to your side and vanquish all evil And if I made a mistake, I could raise my hands, shrug my shoulders and say: "I'm just an actor! I'm just an actor!"
But life's not a film, it's a place filled with unscripted lines Where laws of gravity and physics still apply Can't take imaginary wings into the sky 'Cause hearts that are broken can stay broken for a long time
If this world was a dream, I would never be a second late Teleport to Africa and sleep in indigo shade 355 always be on time, even clear at 9 Better clear my mind, 'cause crazy things make perfect sense in mine
If this world was a dream, I'd feel no pain Rapid-fire bullets bounce off my chest, Walk without a sting through a hornet's nest Parents live forever, children never die Husbands never leave and wives never cry Every house would sleep safe at night
But this world is not a dream, it's a place I must reside Where problems don't disappear in the blink of an eye Can't live one life at night, wake up, then turn back time 'Cause hearts that are broken can stay broken for a long time
Only one life, 'twill soon be past The trumpet blare will sound at last No replay, all for Judgement Day; No replay, all for Judgement Day.

| Sarah and I, the "Michael Yee Duo", are just about set to begin recording our first album, titled "A Tale of Two". The remaining recording equipment will be arriving within the next week.
Currently in the songwriting stage, we have 19 songs finished or almost finished, and 5 songs that aren't quite finished but have considerable potential. We also never know what new ideas will spontaneously pop up in the next few months-- new ones pop up all the time. So that's 24+ songs total that we're hoping to pare down to around 14. And although we have performed a few of these, or at least practiced (or not even), recording will demand a much higher level of precision, thought, arrangement, and selectiveness.
So here we are, ready to begin the next phase of our musical journey together, and there is so much to pray for, and so much to work out, in so many ways. So please pray for us, in these ways:
Please pray for our humility, as it is so easy to boast even when it is God who gives creativity and talents and God who can take it away. May there be no trace of idolatry in this project-- no being or person exalted but only Christ.
Also pray for inspiration, as we are being challenged in new ways-- not only in our songwriting, guitarring, or singing, but also in producing, arranging, and recording at a much higher level than we've ever experienced previously.
Pray for wisdom, as we deal with finances, copyrights, and people.
Pray also for God's provision in finances, recording space, and scheduling.
May The LORD, who gives breath to sing and fingers to move, who in His mercy creates life to sing about and who provides the very words with which to write, be magnified in every part of this project. While not a Christian album, may only Christ shine all the more in every note, as all things are from Him and to Him, and so are only worth sharing for HIS glory.
